The first steel cutting for the first-in-class Aframax tanker was held at the Shipbuilding Complex “Zvezda” on December 8, 2017. The event took place in the hull production shop in the presence of important visitors and the SSC employers.

Aframax oil tankers will become the first orders of a new shipyard for large range vessel construction.  The future tankers are unique vessels. They are designed for unrestricted navigation area and designed for transportation of crude oil and oil products. The Aframax tankers are designed in compliance with high standards of environmental safety and can run on both traditional fuels and clean fuel – liquefied natural gas. The length of the tanker, construction of which officially started on December 8, will be 250 m, the beam - 44 m, deadweight - 114 kt. A helideck is provided for on the vessel.

The honorary guests on the ceremony were Andrey Shishkin, Vice-President for energetics, localization and innovations, PJSC “NK “Rosneft”, Konstantin Laptev, Head of the Machinery and Technologies Localization Department, PJSC “NK “Rosneft”, Oleg Tereshenko, Managing Director, JSC “Rosnefteflot” and Pavel Shihov, Director, Far Eastern Branch of the FAO “Russian Marine Register of Shipping”.

Spectators of the ceremonial moment also were the representatives of the partner companies, in particular, the Far Eastern Shipbuilding and Ship Repair Center, city administration of Bolshoy Kamen and, of course, SSC “Zvezda” personnel, which is expected to make the history by joint efforts further that is to take part in construction of the vessels.

In his welcoming speech Andrey Shishkin noticed that the way which Zvezda had made in two years –from the moment of outfitting the hull production shop and till the beginning of construction of the unique vessels that will carry oil and gas of “Rosneft” company. He congratulated the enterprise employees with the beginning of steel cutting for the first modern tanker, running on natural gas motor fuel, which will be fabricated in Russia.

–Zvezda has an objective set by the state, that is to bring Russian shipbuilding to a new level, - Sergey Tseluiko, the Managing Director of the Shipbuilding Complex addressed to the audience. "The largest and the most modern vessels shall be built at our facilities, the first of which will be the Aframax tanker." And the SSC team has a lot of work to do: from steel cutting to the vessel launch. In order to fulfill these tasks, “Zvezda” has all the conditions: the most advanced equipment, and most significantly, smart and skillful specialists. Way to go!

And now the main process has been launched: in front of the audience, the ultramodern highly dynamic gas-plasma cutting machine "Omnimat 8000" in a few minutes draws from a 13 mm thick steel sheet the image of the future detail with millimeter precision.

The act of the beginning of steel cutting for the lead "Aframax" tanker was signed by Andrey Shishkin, Sergey Tseluiko and Oleg Tereshchenko. Witnesses of this important event were given memorable souvenirs - tanker silhouettes cut out by SSC "Zvezda" workers with the same machine as the first detail of the future vessel was made.

After the ceremony, the guests saw other equipment of the hull production shop operating, in particular, hydraulic press for steel plate bending, butt welding portal for plates, portal cutting and marking machine SicoMat, portals for assembling and welding the main framing, turn-over unit of plates. The machines will process details of the future tanker.

Zvezda Shipyard received a conclusion on Dry dock compliance with technical requirements

Shipbuilding complex Zvezda received a conclusion on Dry dock compliance with project documentation requirements. The document was issued after completion of Rostekhnadzor inspection.  One of the key facilities of the second phase of construction of Zvezda Shipyard has officially been commissioned.  Dry Dock of SSK Zvezda is the largest in Russia and one of the largest in the world.

The unique facility measuring 485 by 114 meters and depth of 14 meters, provides unlimited opportunities for construction of numerous types of existing and prospective Vessels without limiting the launching hull weight, including the largest Ice class LNG carrier for operation at Northen Sea Route, drilling Vessels of strengthen ice class, complex marine equipment, as well as construction of elements of the top structures of semi-submersible and other offshore platforms.

The construction of Dry dock has been started in September, 2018.  Russian President Vladimir Putin took part in the solemn ceremony of pouring the first cubic meter of concrete.  During construction, 3,148,706 cubic meters of earthwork have been completed at the facilities, 289,309 cubic meters concrete and reinforced concrete structures have been constructed, 4,368 metal piles were sunk, 8,747 bored piles were made, 3,432 tons of steel structures were installed.

Unique piping equipment was installed at Dry dock. Four pumping units with a capacity of 4800 kW are capable of pumping out more than 600 thousand cubic meter of sea water in record time - no more than 8 hours.  This is the most productive pimping equipment installed at Russian Shipyards.

Also there is a floating caisson installed in Dry dock. A floating structure of 114 m long and 13.45 m high separates the dock chamber from the water area, the bottom of which is located below the water level. The floating caisson hull made of shipbuilding high-strength steel. It has a continuous waterproof coating and divided by decks and bulkheads into air, ballast and open compartments.  The floating caisson has ballast systems, drainage systems, ventilation systems, dry dock filling valves, as well as a local fire extinguishing system and a fire alarm.  The floating caisson is controlled from the central console and local posts.  Another feature is the availability of a roadway on the upper deck of the floating caisson.

In addition, a technological gate was delivered to the dock, which allows dividing the dock area into separate independent compartments for the construction of several Vessels at the same time.  There were installed four tower cranes with a lifting capacity of 60 tons and a Goliath gantry crane with a lifting capacity of 1200 tons.

Shipbuilding Complex Zvezda is being created by the group of companies headed by PJSC NK Rosneft under the authority of the president of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin. The following facilities have already been put into operation at SSK Zvezda: Hull Fabrication Shop, Paint Shops, Open final assembly area with a fleet of unique cranes and a modern self-propelled transportation system, Floating transfer dock. The constructed workshops made it possible, without waiting for the completion of the construction of the shipyard, to start Vessels construction.

The Dry dock has the following facilities:

∙ Dry dock, total area of 65,898 m2;

∙ Main pumping station with a total area of ​​2,087 m2;

Jointing quay No. 1 with the length of 124.5 m;

Jointing quay No. 2 with the length of 77.58 m;

∙ Outfitting quay No. 1 with the length of 111.62 m;

∙ Outfitting quay No. 2 with the length of 410 m;

∙ Outfitting quay No. 3 with the length of 400 m;

∙ Main gate (floating caisson) and intermediate technological gate of the dry dock;

∙ Portal tower cranes with the lifting capacity of 60 t (4 pcs);

∙ Portal tower cranes, capacity 70 t (4 pcs);

∙ Goliath type gantry crane, capacity 1,200 t;

∙ Complex of treatment facilities for industrial and rain runoff;

∙ Heating points;

∙ 10 kV transformer substations — 8 units; 

∙ Gasification station for industrial gases;

∙ Permanent zone of customs control;

∙ Outdoor network and technological equipment.

The construction of the Dry Dock, one of the largest in the world, has been completed. The commissioning work was successfully carried out. The unique hydraulic structure measuring 485 by 114 meters and depth of 14 meters, provides unlimited opportunities for construction  Vessels of any size and complexity. The Dry Dock was put into operation ahead of originally scheduled date.

Specialists of Zvezda SSK together with representatives of Rostekhnadzor and State Expert Review Panel conducted inspection of the dry dock and its equipment for all mechanisms readiness for operation. Earlier, dry dock was filled with water in normal operation to control filtering process of the hydraulic facility. Floating bulkhead was delivered and installed on the proper operation position. It separates the dock space which bottom is below the water level from the water area. Technological bulkhead was delivered to the dry dock, it allows to divide the dock area into separate independent sections for simultaneous construction of several vessels. There were installed four 60 t tower cranes and one 1200 t Goliath crane.

Zvezda Shipbuilding Complex is being created by the group of companies headed by PJSC NK Rosneft under the authority of the president of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin. The following facilities have already been put into operation: Hull fabrication shop, Paint shops, Open final assembly area with unique cranes and advanced self-propelled transportation system, floating transfer dock. Due to the built workshops it is possible to start vessels fabrication  without waiting for the completion of the shipyard construction.

Anyone who feels like it can vote in favor of their favorite names for the two research vessels to be built at Zvezda SSK. Universities and Research Institutes provided the list of variants.

Research vessels are constructed within the framework of the "Science and Universities" national project. Zvezda shipyard was appointed by the Resolution of the Russian Federation Government as the only executor of the order. CDB “Lazurit” developed the Project of Research Vessels.

The purpose of the new vessels is to carry out scientific research and fundamental and applied work in the waters of the World Ocean, including hydrometeorological survey, measurement of magnetical, gravity, electric and thermal fields, realization  biological and environmental researches, high-resolution geological and hydrographical bottom survey, lab sampling and analysis of geologic and bottom  materials with the use of ocean engineering,  ecological monitoring of the environment. A wide range of measurements will be carried out using the up-to-date onboard and towed facilities; the Research Vessel laboratories will be able to process the obtained data in real time.

The ARC4 ice class of the vessels allows them to independently overcome first-year ice with a thickness of up to 0.6 meters in winter-spring navigation and up to 0.8 meters in summer-autumn one. The length of the vessel will be 122, 5 meters, deadweight – 8130 ton. The endurance of such vessels is 50 days / 7,500 nautical miles. Helicopters pads are provided on the vessels.

The names for Research Vessels can be chosen during the generally available on-line voting on the website of Ministry of Education and Science of Russia. The list of famous sea explorers, who had played  important role in the development of Russian and World science, is formed out of universities and research institutes proposals, taking part in field researches on the Research vessel:

Sea trials of “Vladimir Vinogradov” tanker have been completed at Zvezda Shipbuilding complex. The second Aframax tanker was built at Zvezda SSK on request of Rosnefteflot , NK Rosneft subsidiary.

The vessel was launched on August 25, 2021.  Mooring trials of the tanker have been successfully completed, in the course of which systems and equipment were checked and adjusted, main engine was started, its performance capability and readiness for sea trials were checked.

Upon completion of all obligatory procedures, “Vladimir Vinogradov ” was unmoored from the outfitting quay, removed from the shipyard water area and moved under its own power to the trials area in the course of which speed performance and maneuvarability at all operation modes were tested.

During the sea trials the crew and trial crew together with Zvezda SSK specialists checked operation of main and auxiliary engines propulsion system as well as life support system and navigational complex.  On the basis of the sea trials results, control opening of mechanisms was carried out to present to RS and the customer - Rosnefteflot.

Aframax tankers are designed for crude oil  and products transportation in the unrestricted navigation area. The tanker length is 250 meters, the width is 44 meters, the deadweight is 114 000 tons, the speed is 14,6 knots, the ice class - ICE-1А.   The vessel is equipped with the helicopter pad.

Zvezda Shipbuilding Complex is being created by the group of companies headed by PJSC NK Rosneft under the authority of the president of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin. Nowadays, Zvezda portfolio of orders  comprises 12 Aframax-type tankers, of which 10 were ordered by Rosnefteflot. At the moment 6 tankers are being fabricated at the workshops and on the slipway.

Aframax tankers are the first vessels of such type built in Russia. Aframax tankers are called «green». They were designed in line with high environmental safety standards. Main and auxiliary propulsion systems can operate both on traditional and environmentally  friendly fuel-liquified natural gas which is in line with the new regulations to limit emissions of sulfur oxides and greenhouse gases in the Baltic and Northern sea.

The keel laying ceremony of the lead vessel of Arc7 LNG carriers was held at Dry Dock of Zvezda SSK territory.

A symbolic nameplate was attached to the keel section of the Vessel. The third LNG carrier will be named after Sergei Witte, a Russian statesman, financier, founder of Russian industrialization.

Contracts for the construction of 15 Arc7 ice class LNG carriers, intended for the cargo export from the “Arctic LNG-2” project, were signed by SSK Zvezda and the companies of the VEB.RF group and PAO SovComflot in December 2019 - July 2020. The steel cutting for the lead Vessel of the series was begun at the Shipyard in November 2020.

SSK Zvezda is the first Russian shipyard implementing a project for the construction of such vessels. Ice class LNG Carriers are designed to transport LNG and are capable of operating in arctic conditions due to the Arc7 strengthened ice class and icebreaking capability up to 2.1 meters. These are Vessels of significant weight and dimensions: the length of the Vessel is 300 m, beam moulded is 48.8 m, deadweight is 81,000 tons. The Vessel propulsion system capacity is 45 MW.

A distinctive feature of LNG Carriers is the availability of Mark III membrane-type LNG storage system, which license for construction was obtained by the shipyard for the first time in the country, having successfully passed the audit of Gaztransport & Technigaz (GTT) - French engineering company specializing in the development and licensing of the construction of cryogenic membrane containment systems dedicated to the transport and storage of liquefied gas.

In addition, the Vessel will be equipped with three unique PODs, the production of which is situated on SSK Zvezda territory at VRK Sapphire Plant.

On May 26-28, the Cluster Scientific and Technical Conference (CSTC) of young experts of PAO “NK “Rosneft" was held on the basis of the Far Eastern Center of shipbuilding and ship repair in Vladivostok. The young experts from: Zvezda SSK, LLC, JSC “FES “Zvezda”, FEDI (Far Eastern Design Institute) “Vostokproektverf”, LLC, JSC “CKB “Lazurit”, JSC “SRCD” (Ship Repair Center “Dalzavod”) and JSC “179 SRY” (Ship Repair Yard) - took part in the Conference.

Proceedings of conference took place in two sections: “Process optimization in shipbuilding and ship repair” (16 works, 22 participants) and “Design and construction of marine facilities” (13 works, 14 participants).

11 young experts represented the team of the Zvezda Shipbuilding Complex at the CSTC: Evgeny Puzanov, Illya Vetrov, Aleksandr Ivanov, Georgii Savitchenko, Illia Ikhtonov, Pavel Glushan, Leonid Kosach, Ayaru Kokusheva, Irina Budesko, Ivan Protcenko and Dmitrii Yakimenok.

In the section of “Design and construction of marine facilities”, our colleagues, experts of the technologic and handling equipment department (the head is Sergey Teploukhov) took the winning places. The work of Evgeny Puzanov “The introduction of universal equipment for the installation of azipods, rudder blade, propeller screw at the shipbuilding enterprise, affiliated to PAO “NK “Rosneft” was honored to be the best. Alexandr Ivanov with his work “The introduction of integrated solutions to reduce operating costs when coating” won the 3-d place. In the section of “Process optimization in shipbuilding and ship repair”, SSK “Zvezda” also did not remain without awards: Illya Vetrov presented the project called “Optimization of methods of the ultrasonic inspection on quality and time” and won the 2-d place.

The final round in the Interregional Scientific and Technical Conference of Young Experts of PAO “NK “Rosneft” in Moscow, which will be held in October 2021 at Lomonosov Moscow State University site, awaits participants who won medal places and nominations of the CSTC.

Steel cutting for 6th carrier in the series of ARC7 LNG carriers was started at Zvezda Shipbuilding Complex.  Ceremony took place in the Hull Fabrication Shop. The first part was cut on the the high-technology plasma cutting machine in the presence of representatives of the shipyard, Buyer and RMRS.

LNG carriers construction is one of the most technology-intensive processes in the world shipbuilding industry. Such projects can be implemented at Zvezda SSK due to the equipment unique for the Russian shipyards and cutting-edge, world class technologies. Zvezda SSK obtained an international license and became the only shipyard in the country where  LNG carriers with Mark III membrane-type LNG storage system can be fabricated.

ARC7 LNG carries are intended for transportation of liquefied natural gas and are able to operate in stern climatic conditions. The length of the vessel is 300 m, beam moulded is 48,8 m, cargo tank capacity is 172 600 m3.  These vessels are notable for higher  environmental safety as they are mainly fuelled by liquefied natural gas.

The vessel design allows to navigate in the ice over 2 m thick. The capability of LNG  carrier propulsion system of  is 45 MW.  The vessel is equipped with 3 unique PODs that are manufactured at the joint venture of Rosneft ang GE in Bolshoi Kamen.

LNG carriers are built for Arctic LNG2 Project on behalf of PAO NOVATEK.  New vessels construction is financed by VEB.RF. Zvezda SSK and VEB.RF Groups concluded the Contracts for construction of 15 LNG carriers for  liquefied gas transportation in difficult ice conditions of Northern Sea Route. The vessels will be operated under long-term time charter contracts of PAO Sovcomflot (for a pilot vessel) and LLC “SMART LNG” (an affiliated undertaking of Sovcomflot and NOVATEK Group of companies, for the rest of 14 vessels of the series) with LLC “Arctic LNG 2” (an affiliated undertaking of PAO NOVATEK).

Zvezda Shipbuilding Complex has started steel cutting for the ARC 7 Ice class LNG Carrier. The construction of the Vessel, the fifth in a series of 15 LNG Carriers ordered to the shipyard within the framework of the “Arctic LNG-2” liquefied natural gas production project implementation, starts with the solemn ceremony of the first steel cutting. The main project sponsor and charterer of the cargo is Novatek company. The Contract for the Vessel construction was concluded between SSK Zvezda and companies of VEB.RF group in December 2019. The delivery of the Vessel to the customer is scheduled for the end of 2023.

Zvezda Shipbuilding Complex has received a batch of unique transport equipment to ensure the operation of the largest dry dock in Russia and the sites of the second stage of the shipyard construction. Four flatbed transporters – multiwheelers have the cargo capacity range from 150 to 650 tons.

The multiwheeler is a multiple-wheel platform, equipped with driver’s cabins on both sides and has the possibility of remote control. Every wheel of multiwheeler can be rotated through 180 degrees, which allows to transport hundreds tons of bulky cargos with high maneuverability.

The main task of this equipment is the transportation of sections and blocks of vessels: from the workshops to the paint chambers, from the paint chambers to the open final assembly area. At the same time, two multiwheelers can be docked for synchronous operation, jointly transporting cargo weighing up to 1300 tons under the control of one driver – to ensure the advanced technology of large-block shipbuilding used at the shipyard.

Earlier, a system of self-driving modular wheeled transporters with the cargo capacity of 3300 tons was supplied to the shipyard. This equipment is also designed for the displacement of bulky sections and vessels’ blocks between the workshops and the sites of SSK during their construction.

When creating the Zvezda Shipyard, advanced technical solutions and the most modern equipment are introduced. The largest open final assembly area and dry dock in the country are fitted with unique crane facilities, including two “Goliath” type gantry cranes with the cargo capacity of 1200 tons each. The “Vympel” is also one of the largest floating transfer dock in Russia, it allows launching vessels up to 300 meters (length) and 51 meters (width), as well as objects of marine equipment with a launching weight of up to 40 thousand tons. Besides, the Shipyard is differentiated by the high degree of manufacturing automation, the high-precision methods of marking, welding and steel cutting, including laser, technologies of testing works based on the noncontact measurement and 3-D modeling, modern technologies of control processes and manufacturing planning at all the stages – from the developing documentation to the representation of the vessel.
